What actually made a difference for me... (Not everything—but the right things).
There’s a lot of advice out there about what to do in perimenopause.
Some of it helps.
Most of it doesn’t.
So I want to share a few changes I made that actually mattered.
And more importantly—why they matter.
1. Alcohol
As we get older, the way we metabolize alcohol changes.
It can:
→ Worsen sleep quality
→ Increase hot flashes
→ Affect mood stability
Even small amounts can have a bigger impact than they used to.
2. Temperature and sleep
Lowering your sleep environment matters more than you think.
Heat disrupts REM sleep.
And REM is where your brain processes and resets.
When sleep quality drops—
Everything else feels harder.
3. Sharing the mental load
This one is underrated.
If you’re carrying everything mentally—
Your system never fully resets.
Support isn’t just helpful.
It’s necessary.
4. Magnesium
Magnesium plays a role in:
→ Calming neurotransmitters
→ Supporting melatonin production
Which is why it can help with sleep and nervous system regulation.
5. Nutrition shifts
Reducing processed and red meat can:
→ Lower inflammation
→ Improve cardiovascular health
→ Support long-term brain health
None of these are extreme changes.
But together—
They support a system that is more sensitive than it used to be.
That’s the key in this phase.
Not doing everything.
But doing the right things.
If you want help figuring out what actually matters for you—
